Rag Time Flower Hat

We love to go to the Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. At their Rag Time Street Fair we had the opportunity to view re-enactors perform dances like the Cake Walk while listening to music performed by groups including Michigan's River Raisin Revue. The sounds, costumes, scenery,  and tastes takes you away from the worries and stress of everyday living to a relaxing fun celebration in times past.
Ragtime Flower Hat by Jodie Brown 4/2013

It was fun painting this piece during the long gray days of winter dreaming about that beautiful summer day.  Flowers, bright blue sky, warm sunshine on my skin, and summer weight dresses.
Mmmm. Take me their now.

Rather than the person being the focal point, I chose to make the flowers the focus of the piece with the lovely girl as the stage prop. The bright sunlight hitting her shoulders creates visual movement pulling your eyes temporarily away from the flowers. The clay board was a new surface for me to try. It is very different from canvas and naturally more like masonite. Every stroke is visible and the paint seems to soak right in to the clay. The flowers were painted with many layers and glazes to capture the delicate lights and shadows on their petals made easier with the clay board's smooth surface compared to the fabric weave of canvas.
